Aston® Pilates

"I have been studying Aston Mechanics for two years now and it has made a tremendous difference in the quality of my life as well as with my Pilates clients. Aston Mechanics has interfaced with my training beautifully. My visual assessment skills have become much more efficient and accurate while the client is moving and at rest. Continuing to assess the movement patterns throughout the workout helps me to change that pattern in the whole body for overall improvements.

I have taught Pilates since 1986 but it has been the study of Aston Mechanics that gave me a more precise and clearer understanding of complex body patterns and an understanding of the function of asymmetry within that pattern. One of the beauties of Aston Mechanics is that the tools are no different for the client with disabilities than for a client that is a trained athlete. By releasing unnecessary patterns of tension and effort in the physical makeup of a client and the way they work an immediate change is felt and seen. It is no longer just a workout but a way to empower the client into his own recovery and evolution with the idea of working with gravity rather than against it by using GRF, the client learns a way of supporting their body without undue tension rather than just working hard, they work efficiently and deeply with economy of movement and transformative results."

Assessment and Problem Solving

This course introduces a system created by Judith Aston that will teach you to develop your observational skills and recognize body patterns. These skills will help you solve the problems of why symptoms occur and reoccur in relation to underlying causes that can be seen in a body's structure. You will look at the alignment and "three-dimensionality" of the body and participate in body usage movement labs to create changes in your own body's form. You will also be introduced to the differences between structural (true limitations) and functional (compensations) holding patterns. You will use your newly developed observational skills and apply them to your current Pilates techniques to realize the enhanced benefits from this course.

Movement Assessment/Applications

This course teaches skills to assess the body in motion, facilitate movement education, and apply ergonomic supports for body use in rest and action. The movement units taught in this course will enable habitual tensions to release allowing for an exploration to a new body alignment. This new alignment will be applied to common daily tasks such as sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and gait. You will learn skills to: teach movement as a massage to unwind unnecessary tension, to change current inefficient or ineffective patterns of movement, facilitate movement using demonstration, verbal and tactile cues, identify the client's unique neutral alignment in daily activities, modify chairs, worksites, etc. to support the body's needs, and enable self care and problem solving for your clients.
